Question 1

Is this Protect PDF tool free to use?

Accepted Answer

Yes. It's free, with no sign-up and no account required. The limits listed below apply to every file.

Question 2

Is my PDF or password uploaded anywhere?

Accepted Answer

No. Your PDF and password are processed entirely in your browser using local WebAssembly and never uploaded. Neither your file contents nor your password are ever sent to any server or recorded anywhere.

Question 3

What are the limits?

Accepted Answer

The PDF can be up to 50 MB and 1,000 pages. These are practical processing limits for working in your browser, so a very large PDF can still be slow or fail on some devices.

Question 4

What encryption algorithm is used?

Accepted Answer

This tool uses standard AES-256 (Revision 6) PDF encryption. Encrypted files can be opened by any standard PDF reader that supports password-protected PDFs.

Question 5

Can a lost password be recovered?

Accepted Answer

No. There is no backdoor or recovery mechanism. If you forget or lose the password you set, the file cannot be decrypted. Always keep a safe record of your password.

Question 6

What happens to my original file?

Accepted Answer

Your original file is never modified or overwritten. The tool creates a new, encrypted copy with -protected.pdf appended to the filename.
